对大鼠、小鼠和其它小动物而言，通用sar-1000型小动物呼吸机是非常简便的，每一次呼吸都能在容里模式下送出固定的潮气量，或者每一次膨胀停止时在压力模式下调一个气道压力。无论哪一个模式，肺部充气维持在吸气的结束直到吸气时间百分比消失，终末吸气暂停改善气体交换和呼吸的效率。

在容量模式下，呼吸机按照气流时间原则操作，在这里一个已知的气流用一组时间送出固定的容里气体;在压力模式下，气流被调整为合适的吸气时间。

在lcd液晶显示器上不仅能直观地显示实际计算的潮气量，还能显示每分钟呼吸次数和其它呼吸参数。内置气泵独立运作，通过后板接口抽入室内空气、氧气或麻醉气体。
